Waulking Song Group

Who are we? ... Có  sinne?

We are a group specialising in Gaelic work songs, particularly those sung by women while waulking the tweed. We are based in Greenock, Inverclyde, on the west coast of Scotland. Our name, Sgioba Luaidh Inbhirchluaidh, means "Inverclyde Waulking Group".

My name is Frances Dunlop. I formed Sgioba Luaidh in 2000 with some friends, fellow-members of Greenock Gaelic Choir. Sadly, the Choir disbanded, but we were having so much fun singing waulking songs that we decided to stay together as a group. We currently have a dozen members (more always welcome!), and perform regularly at venues up and down the west of Scotland, with the occasional foray to the far east - Dunfermline and Edinburgh! We have taken part in an international festival in Poland - and have even invaded England on occasion!

We hope you will find our website informative and enjoyable. The  News and Calendar pages are updated regularly. Do contact us with any questions or comments - or best of all, to book us! You can email us, or leave a message in our guest-book.

SOME COMMENTS:

This was the best after dinner entertainment I have ever experienced!

You're the best thing we've seen in Scotland!

Summer wouldn't be the same without you! (Sir Lachlan MacLean, Duart Castle)

It was a brilliant evening. You created such an atmospheric scene with your enthusiasm and the detail of the presentation, it was easy to imagine the lives of the women and the hard work they were involved in. It's wonderful that you ... are keeping alive such a precious oral tradition.

It was a meeting with a difference and so very informative … you all sang so sweetly and with a real lilt in your voices …. we shall remember your group for a long time.

Your talk and demonstration was most interesting and informative and your songs were entertaining and sometimes very amusing. A really happy night.

Chòrd an “stint” agaibh ruinn glan fhéin, agus dh’éisdinn fad na h-oidhche ris na sgeulachdan agad. Mo bheannachd oirbh, agus cumaibh a’dol.

It was lovely to see the group enjoying themselves as much as the audience did!

You certainly got the party going and created a marvellous atmosphere… People are still commenting on how great you all were!

The majority of us didn’t know what to expect but everyone had a great time especially trying to sing along with the Gaelic.

Bha e math agus chòrd e rium. (Nuala, aged 7)

Tapadh leibh airson nan oran bha e deagh spòrs. (Seumas, aged 7)

Even when we didn't understand, we understood!

Where you guys go, there's always fun!

I didn't just enjoy it - I LOVED it! (Maeve, aged 7)
